Tony Evans (Windows Media needed) The Poison of Materialism - Sunday, August 08, 2004 Food for thought: "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."- Henry David Thoreau Verse of the Day for August 8, 2004 A wise man fears and departs from evil, But a fool rages and is self-confident.Proverbs 14:16 NKJV Although we have tried to erase the word “evil” from our cultural dictionary, or attempted to confine the concept to fables and myths, evil just keeps interrupting our evolutionary progress. Just when you think that mankind has grown too sophisticated for Islamic violence, that violence seizes the American news stage and refuses to run back to the shadows. Misguided doctors and educators talk to us in soothing tones about the disposal of fetal tissue, and all the while the blood of the slaughtered cries out for justice. When we are numbed by the persistence of evil, it will suddenly offer something so heinous, so horrible, that even the most calloused cynic must wonder at the horrific capabilities of the human being. Most of what dominates our prime time entertainment would have been considered evil just one century past. Now that sin and evil are terms you’ll rarely hear on a newscast, one must wonder what will become of the human race in a world dominated by the seven deadly sins – sins that cannot be acknowledged as such. To ignore evil is to ignore the fundamental problem with man in this universe. Until “evil” is welcomed back into our cultural lexicon, “good” will be equally hard to find. |
